Friday our team was with our school partner, Birhan Academy. The School Director, Mesele Mamo selected 45 students to spend the day with us. Of the 575 students who attend the school, these 45 were among the poorest of the poor in the community surrounding the academy.
The purpose of the day was to bring some joy and light to these littles one who live in very difficult situations.
The Arukah Global team facilitated games(coordinated by team member Carina), made crafts, provided a warm meal and engaged in the simple but impactful act of being present.
Crafts were prepared by students of Los Paseos Elementary School in San Jose, CA. The Erhiopian children were overjoyed to learn this, and in return made thank you which we will present to the San Jose students after our return to the States.
In all my years coming to Ethiopia, I don't think I have witness so much laughter from children in one day. Our time together was truly life giving to all involved.
Our day ended with our Ethiopian friends singing and teaching us a couple of gospel songs in their language of Amharic. Then, with the leading of team member Freddy, we returned the favor with a couple of songs from home. The singing melted into a spontaneous and sweet time of prayer. It was a moving time as people who spoke different languages encouraged and lifted one another up to God. Although we could not understand one another, there were many tears of joy as we sensed a deep unity of Spirit.
This was a precious day which ended in a sacred moment that will be remembered by all who were there.
